Have we not seen this before?

Well, after the weekend results in the NFL playoffs, the question is begged to be asked "Was that interception the last pass that Brett Favre will ever throw in the NFL?"

This time, I actually think it might have been.

Or was it?

I don't know if you remember this, but go back to the 2008 NFC Championship game: Packers vs. Giants. Game is in overtime, and the Packers have the ball. Brett Favre drops back, scrambles to his right, throws downfield for Donald Driver, and..... completes a pass to a New York Giants defender. The rest is history. New York trots downfield behind brilliant passing from Eli Manning, they kick the winning field goal, advance to the Super Bowl, where they defeat 19-point favorite New England Patriots in probably THE MOST memorable Super Bowl ever.

Sunday night, it was almost the story, different jersey, for Favre.

Favre decided to be the gunslinger that everyone knew he was at the time when everyone knew he shouldn't do it. And lo and behold, an interception on a cross-body throw. They go into overtime, New Orleans wins the toss (thanks to the NFL's confounded overtime rules, more on that in a minute), and marches downfield, and kicks the winning field goal from 40 yards.

Props to New Orleans though. They played probably the second best team in the NFL in the loudest environment with the highest stakes, and they gutted out a win to advance to the Super Bowl for the first time in franchise history.

But Brett Favre might really be done this time.

After the game, he was quoted as saying that his chances of returning next year are "highly unlikely". I know that the past 2 years of the ol' Gunslinger's offseason have been marred in "When and if he comes back" talk, only with him to return each time. But with the punishment he took on Sunday in New Orleans, you have to almost wonder if he thinks it is worth it anymore. Each time he took a punishing hit, Fox's TV cameras would zoom in on Deanna Favre cringing her face, unable to look.

Whatever he decides to do, whether it be retire (once and for all) or come back for his 20th NFL season, props to Brett Favre. He is one of the toughest and most accomplished quarterbacks in NFL history. Even after his interception on Sunday night, he gutted out an incredible performance under the conditions, not to mention that he took a beating from the Saints' defensive line. If he goes, he goes, and the NFL is grateful for his incredible 19 year playing career and the popularity he brought to 3 franchises.

Now, NFL, we need to discuss your overtime rules. Doesn't the old adage go something like: "Let the players play, since the players decide the score on the field"? I am pretty sure that the word "players" doesnt mean a "very large, 2 sided coin". I absolutely hate the NFL's overtime rules. Overtime essentially gets decided by chance. Both teams do not get a fair shot at taking the ball into the endzone. If one scores first, that's it. Game over. Yes, I understand the defense needs to show up and play too, but a team is more than just its defense. It's the offense and special teams too. If the NBA played by the same rules, the team that won the coin toss would automatically win the game, since no defense is played period. Why don't they switch to modified college rules? Let both teams have the opportunity to have the football. They will each get at least 1 possession of the football. If both teams score the first time, let both teams get a second possession each. If Team A doesn't score, but Team B does, then its game over. Both teams had equal opportunity to score. Its not rocket science - but the NFL sure thinks it is.

My picks for the Super Bowl:

Indianapolis 28, New Orleans 24.

Why the Colts are the Team to Beat

Since the 2009-10 season began I have just been bullish on the Colts. It may have been because my boy Austin Collie was drafted by Indianapolis in the fouth round out of Brigham Young University, or it may have come from the fact that I believe that Payton Manning is the best quarterback in the National Football League. Either way, if the Indianapolis Colts find a way to shake off the dust, clean off the rust and rough up the Ravens, they will win Super Bowl XLIV.

BCS Bust!

BCS bust is right! With the whole country tuned into the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl TCU and Boise St. really stepped in it with this one. Two of the most prolific offences in the country decided to have a defensive show-down under the big lights. Problem is, neither defense played particularly well either! Boise St. won on a pick-6 and fake punt…really??? Boise can say what they want about that “being their style of play,” or “that’s the way they play the game,” bottom line is they laid an egg.
