BCS bust is right! With the whole country tuned into the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl TCU and Boise St. really stepped in it with this one. Two of the most prolific offences in the country decided to have a defensive show-down under the big lights. Problem is, neither defense played particularly well either! Boise St. won on a pick-6 and fake punt…really??? Boise can say what they want about that “being their style of play,” or “that’s the way they play the game,” bottom line is they laid an egg.
With both quarterbacks posting their lowest passer rating of the season, this game gives the BCS supporters exactly what they wanted. “Small schools can’t do it. They can’t play under the big lights. Can’t handle the pressure.” Of course they’re easy to dismiss the aforementioned Utah (twice) and the same Boise St. victories of past years as well as the BYU-Oklahoma game in new Cowboy’s Stadium earlier this year. True, it wasn’t a bowl game, but Oklahoma was a definite contender and Sam Bradford was looking to repeat as Heisman. Who was it that felt the heat of the lights that night?
Don’t get me wrong, neither of these teams should’ve been playing for the BCS National Championship, but at least they should have had their chance to play a BCS school. They were denied the opportunity to show they could play with the big boys, or that they shouldn’t because they can’t contend.
I can’t say that I know how to fix the BCS, but at least give the schools who have earned their chance their shot! On “The Dan Patrick Show” a few weeks ago, the director of the BCS, Bill Hancock, said that he did agree with the BCS system. That those teams who go undefeated and don’t end up in the bowl that they really do deserve “Good season! Have fun in the bowl, good luck next year.” Now, I don’t have the direct quote in front of me so that was a paraphrase, but the idea is there. He doesn’t care if it’s fair, that’s how it is and that’s how it’s going to be. There’s GOT to be a better way!
With all that said. I enjoyed the bowl season. What little I did get to watch of it. There were some good exciting games. The Central Michigan v. Troy GMAC Bowl was surprisingly good! Roll Tide, roll! Congrats to Nick Saben, Mark Ingram and Co. They took it to a Colt McCoy-less Texas. I did agree with that game. Those were truly the two best teams in College football. Good luck to all next season!aa
