Live Sports

So last night Mrs. Mack and I went to the San Jose Sharks game where they were defeated 5-4 in OT. The game was well played and much enjoyed, but that is not my purpose in writing today. I just have one question, can anything get better then actually being at a sporting event? Especially when your team in the home team, (although being the visitor has it's perks too)! I've been to my fair share of sporting events in my life (I went to my first game when I was two weeks old). I've been to games from Oakland (Let's Go A's!!!) to New York. From Seattle to Boston. I'm not here to go through the long list, but every game I've been to has been an awesome experience.

There's just something about being part of a group of 14,000-60,000 strong. Say what you want about conformism, but when it comes to my A's...I'm a sheep! That screen tells me to get on my feet and get loud, the next day my feet hurt and my voice is gone. When the Sharks score the whole crowed breaks out in to the "Hey!" song (does anyone really know what that song is called anyway?). I think the only sport I have not seen in person is soccer. If a soccer match is anything like it looks like on TV, I really want to be there too! From what I hear, those are the craziest crowds out there. There are those out there that say if they were rich they'd buy big houses, lots of cars...things of that nature. Now, I'd have to convince the wife of this; but I'd get a nice house, (just big enough for the family) a good car (again fitting the family) and season tickets to the A's and Sharks and what ever 49er games that don't fall on Sunday. I LOVE SPORTS!!!

What is it about conforming with 14,000-60,000 people at a sporting event? You actually get to feel that you aren't as crazy as some people think you are, and you are with a group of people who all want the same thing you do: for your team to win! My experience in sporting events primarily goes to basketball, both professional and collegiate. My first ever NBA game was between the Jazz and Timberwolves at the Delta Center. Final score: T'Wolves 103, Jazz 99. I remember it like yesterday. It was April 2, 1996, the year the Jazz were defeated in 7 games by the Sonics in the Western Conference Finals. For some reason, sporting events stick out in our minds more than many memories we have of anything else. Why? Because we are so drawn to the team or franchise that we love that we focus a part of our lives on them, we live through them, and we want them to succeed so that we can feel that we have succeeded! They are a part of us, and we are a part of them. When the Jazz rock the house, I feel it. When they bust out the "Hey" song (which, by the way, is actually called Rock 'n' Roll Part 2 by Gary Glitter....thats right Mack, I got your back), I want to sing it loud with them and the other 19,000 fans in the Delta Center (whether actually in the Delta Center or in front of the TV, either way). You hear stories of people who meet at sporting events. My cousin Eric was one of them. He met his wife at a BYU football game. His wife's twin sister met her husband at his wedding reception (that's a whole other story). We love sports because we feel they will love us back. And, in general, they do.
